96 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine T hriving as a young athlete, Dr. Susan Orpha Kennedy wanted to help young girls make the most of their athletic abilities, as well as their physically active minds. As a teacher, coach and athletic trainer, she is able to achieve all of the above, backed by a BS from Ithaca College in 1973, an MS from the University of Oregon in 1978 and a PhD from Texas Woman’s University in 1991. Most recently, Dr. Kennedy served as a research assistant at Texas Woman’s University until her graduation in 1991. Prior, she was an instructor, coachandathletic trainer at ChadronStateCollege in Nebraska from 1980 to 1984 and substitute teacher and girls’ basketball coach at Lake County School District #7 in Lakeview, Oregon, from 1978 to 1980. She commenced her career in 1973 as a teacher and coach at Housatonic Valley Regional High School, and by 1976, was a graduate teaching fellow at the University of Oregon. She was also an adjunct professor at North Texas State University from 1988 to 1990, where she taught teacher preparation courses in adapted physical education. Named to the Housatonic Valley Regional High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Connecticut Field Hockey Hall of Fame and New Agenda: Northeast Women’s Hall of Fame, Dr. Kennedy holds the WSGOC Distinguished National Service Award and was the recipient of the Katherine B. Pitney Award from the Sasqua Garden Club in 2013 and 2015, as well as the U.S. Lacrosse National Emeritus Award and Federated Garden Club of Connecticut Ellen Carder Memorial Award. Additionally, she was named Outstanding Official by the Connecticut Field Hockey Coaches Association in 2001 and Official of the Year of the Nutmeg State Games in 2000. Throughout her career, Dr. Kennedy has held membership with the American College of Sports Medicine, National Association of Sports Officials and Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference. Since retirement, she has trained lacrosse umpires in the U.S. and internationally while also resetting her focus in saving her father’s orchid collection.
