98 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION the American Society for Composites, Dr. Vinson has authored numerous works, most recently including “Plate and Panel Structures of Isotropic, Composite and Piezoelectric Materials, Including Sandwich Construction” in 2005. A founding editor and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Sandwich Structures and Materials, he has also contributes to such works as “Composite Materials and Their Use in Structures,” “The Behavior of Thin Walled Structures” and “Structural Mechanics: The Behavior of Plates and Shells,” among others. In recognition of his success, Dr. Vinson has accrued several accolades. The American Society for Composites honored him with a 1998 Techonomic Award and a 2007 Research Award, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers gave him a 1981 Centennial Medal. Earlier, he earned an Award in Structural Mechanics from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1977. F rom a young age, Dr. Jack R. Vinson was interested in airplanes and desired to become an aeronautical engineer. Attending Cornell University, he received a BS in mechanical engineering in 1952. During his studies, he was an engineering student at Black & Veatch Consulting Engineers in Kansas City, Missouri, before serving GE in Philadelphia as a functional engineer until 1961. Receiving his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania that same year, he went on to serve as vice president of Dyna/Structures, Inc., from 1961 to 1965. Joining the University of Delaware in 1964, Dr. Vinson first served as an associate professor before becoming professor and chairman of the Department of Structural Mechanics. He attained emeritus status in 2005. During this time, he was also a partner of Structural Mechanics Associates in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, beginning in 1965 – a role he still holds today. A fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, he is the notable founder of the Center for Composite Materials at the University of Delaware, the first of its kind in the United States.
