A current director of the Military Operations Research Society, Dr. Hartley enjoys working on projects that are dispersed across various fields, such as psychiatry, military and government. Demonstrating versatility in his profession, he has authored such books as “An Ontology for Unconventional Conflict ” in 2018, “Unconventional Conflict: A Modeling Perspective” in 2017 and “Predicting Combat Effects” in 1991. “An Ontology of Modern Conflict” is forthcoming and “Cognitive Superiority” is scheduled. Dr. Hartley earned the Steinhardt Award from the Military Applications Society in 2013, which he cites as a career highlight, as the award is a lifetime achievement in operations research. He also received the Koopman Prize from the Military Applications Society in 1994 and Joint Services Commendation Medal from the Department of Defense in 1977. A ttracted to the sciences as a young man, Dr. Dean S. Hartley III attended Wofford College, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and foreign languages in 1968. After receiving a PhD in mathematics from the University of Georgia, he entered active duty in the U.S. Army from 1973 to 1977, where he attained the rank of captain. During his military tenure, he became involved in operations research, thus prompting his interest in applied mathematics. He also served as deputy branch head of the General Purpose Forces Branch in the Command and Control Technology Center in Washington. After departing from the military, Dr. Hartley worked at Milliken & Co. in operations research for two years before being promoted to production planning manager in 1979 and marketing manager in 1984. From 1986 to 1990, he was a research staff member at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, and from 1990 to 2001, he served as a senior research staff member of the Y12 Complex with the Department of Energy.
