74 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION G Graduating from Princeton University in 1971 with a PhD in physics, Dr. Edward J. Groth III pursued employment at his alma mater after receiving his doctorate and taught as an instructor in the Department of Physics for one year before being promoted to assistant professor in 1972. Holding the role for six years, he gained tenure in 1978 and went on to serve as an associate professor, culminating in the role of full professor in 1986. During his time at the university, he was the associate chair of the Department of Physics from 2004 to 2008. He attained emeritus status in 2015. Notably, Dr. Groth taught nearly every undergraduate course in the Department of Physics, as well as numerous graduate courses. Alongside his academic appointments, he has conducted research with several colleagues on characterizing the spatial distribution of galaxies. Commencing in the mid-1970s and lasting through the late 1980s, his research allowed him to be selected as the data and operations team leader for what is now known as the Hubble Space Telescope. Subsequent to the telescope’s launch in 1990, Dr. Groth served as deputy principal investigator for the Wide Field and Planetary Camera, becoming one of the core groups of scientists succeeding in overcoming the telescope’s primary complications. Currently, Dr. Groth remains a consultant to Cornell Technical Services since 2015 and, since 1987, has been a faculty advisor at Rockefeller College. He was the Princeton University representative on the Universities Space Research Association through 2019. Dr. Groth was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and maintains affiliation with American Astronomical Society and American Physical Society. In recognition of his immense achievements and success in physics and academia, Dr. Groth was the recipient of a Medal for Exceptional Science Achievement from NASA in 1992. Likewise, he received an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation fellowship from 1973 to 1975. Honored with the 2020 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr. Groth was highlighted in the third edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering in 1996. EDWARD J.
