75 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine O wing much of his success to his motivation to confront the challenges facing civilization, Dr. John P. Holdren was inspired by two influential books during high school, thus forcing him to think critically about a career bridging science, technology and the humanities. Supported by a BS and MS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he also earned a PhD fromStanford University in 1970. While pursuing doctoral studies, Dr. Holdren was an aerodynamic engineer for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company. After earning his PhD, he served the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as a theoretical physicist before becoming a senior research fellow at the California Institute of Technology. From there, he was hired by the University of California Berkeley in 1973, serving the institution for 23 years as first an assistant professor, then associate professor, professor and chairman of the Energy and Resources Group. Dr. Holdren joined Harvard University in 1996 as a professor of environmental sciences and public policy. Maintaining this role until 2009, he also served as the director of the science, technology, and public policy program in the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. Later returning to Harvard in 2017, he has since continued his role as professor and became an affiliated professor in the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in 2018. Punctuating his Harvard roles, Dr. Holdren served the White House in Washington, D.C., where he was assistant to the President of the United States and director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy between 2009 and 2017. He considers these years a highlight, noting that his time spent supporting former President Barack Obama and championing the role of science and technology in the federal government was most rewarding. He was also the director of the Woods Hole Research Center. Dr. Holdren holds seven honorary doctorates and has contributed articles to professional journals and co-edited or co-authored several books. In 2019, he won the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize from the American Academy of Political and Social Science. Millennium Magazine Featured Listee JOHN P.
