He has been a consulting editor for a variety of professional journals and recently authored the 2020 work “Cyber Abuse: The Dr. Laura Letter.” Likewise, he was the editor of “On Educational Inclusion: Meanings, History, Issues and International Perspectives” in 2020. Authoring or co-authoring over 20 books on special education, learning disabilities and behavioral disorders, Dr. Kauffman earned the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Kansas and had a conference named in his honor, “The Badar-Kauffman Conference,” in 2015. Prior accolades include the 2006 Award for Effective Presentation of Behavior Analysis in the Mass Media from the Society for Applied Behavior Analysis and 2002 Outstanding Leadership Award from the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders. A professor emeritus of education at the University of Virginia since 2003, Dr. James M. Kauffman is a distinguished figure in the world of special education. Hired by the University in 1970, he first served as an assistant professor, then associate professor in the Department of Special Education before being promoted to full professor in 1980. During his tenure, he was also chair of the Department of Special Education and associate dean for research of the School of Education, and held chaired professorships. Earlier in his career, Dr. Kauffman was a special education teacher at Shawnee Heights Unified School District #450 from 1964 to 1967 and an assistant professor of special education at Illinois State University from 1969 to 1970. He commenced his career in 1962 as a teacher in the Children’s Division of the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. Throughout his career, he also maintained involvement with the Council for Exceptional Children and the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders.
