78 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION H ailing from a familial lineage of avid book readers, Dr. David E. Lampe aspired to pursue teaching and literature from a formative age. Coupled with his early years as a farm boy, he applied his diligent work ethic to his undergraduate studies at Buena Vista College, graduating cum laude with a BA in 1962. He subsequently matriculated at the University of Nebraska, where he received an MA in 1964 and PhD in 1969. Willing to share his passion for literature with students, Dr. Lampe commenced his career at Bemidji State University in 1964 as an instructor. Soon thereafter, he assumed the same position at Buena Vista University in 1965 and at the University of Nebraska from 1966 to 1969. Following these appointments, he was employed by the SUNY State College at Buffalo as an assistant professor, associate professor and then full professor from 1969 until attaining emeritus status in 2006. Accruing four decades of experience in academia, he is particularly proud of teaching medieval Renaissance, as well as American literature and poetry. For nearly 30 years, Dr. Lampe served on the board of directors for the Faculty-Student Association at SUNY Buffalo, where he also supported the Poets and Writers series. Additionally, for 10 years he sat on the board of directors of White Pine Press, a nonprofit literary publisher. Intrigued by the Middle Ages, he founded and directed the Western New York Medievalists in Buffalo in 1974, holding the roles until 2004. In an effort to exemplify his fervent love for literature, Dr. Lampe has authored three books of poetry, including his most recent anthology of poems entitled “Close to the Bone” in 2020. Additionally, he edited “The Legend of Being Irish,” “Five Irish Poets,” “An Occasion of Sin” and “Born in Brooklyn.” Married to his late wife, Ruth, for more than 50 years, Dr. Lampe and Ruth Lampe created the David and Ruth Lampe Poetry Endowment at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. He was also affiliated with the Parkside Community Association, who dedicated a street named in honor of Ruth Lampe upon her passing. DAVID E.
