Dale Wesley Lick enjoyed mathematics since he was a child and, coupled with his mother’s encouragement, went on to excel in a career in teaching, research and administration. Graduating with honors from Michigan State University in East Lansing with a BA, he also received an MS in mathematics. In 1965, he earned a PhD in mathematics from the University of California (UC) Riverside. After gaining experience as an instructor of mathematics at various colleges, Dr. Lick began serving as an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Tennessee in 1965. Advancing to associate professor in 1968, he served in that role for one year before becoming an associate professor and head of the Department of Mathematics at Drexel University. Thereafter, he served Russell Sage College as vice president of academy affairs, Old Dominion University as dean of the School of Sciences and Health Professions, Georgia Southern College as president and professor of mathematics and computer science, and the University of Maine as president and professor of mathematics. He also led the creation of the American University in Bulgaria through the University of Maine. Dr. Lick joined Florida State University in Tallahassee in 1991 as president and professor of mathematics. Promoted to university professor in the Learning Systems Institute and Department of Educational Leadership in 1993, he attained emeritus status in 2008. Since 2006, he has served as a board chairman of the technology company, HyLighter LLC, and on the board of trustees of Graceland University from 2016 to 2020. Dr. Lick has contributed 285 newspaper columns, over 100 research and professional articles to journals, and chapters to books. He is the author or co-author of eight books, including “Schools Can Change: A Step-by-Step Change Creation System for Building Innovative Schools and Increasing Learning” in 2013. Dr. Lick was the 2010 recipient of the International Peace Prize from the United Cultural Convention. He also earned the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award fromMichigan State University and the 2020 Humanitarian Award by National Publications.
