82 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION A n expert in the folklore of the Ozarks and educational geography, Dr. E. Joan Miller has held the title of professor emerita at Illinois State University in Normal since 1993. A professor within the Department of Geography at Illinois State University for more than 30 years, she previously served as lecturer within the Department of Geography at Indiana University Bloomington from 1957 to 1962. Earlier in her career, Dr. Miller taught in her native England at the Batley Girls’ Grammar School in England as the head of the Geography Department from 1945 to 1947, as well as Notting Hill and Ealing High School in London from 1947 to 1957. Drawing upon a BA in geography, with honours, from the University of Cambridge from 1944, Dr. Miller continued her education at Cambridge and earned an MA and graduate certificate in education in 1947. Immigrating to the U.S. in 1957, she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and obtained a PhD in geography in 1965. Dr. Miller served as an invited Douglas C. Ridgley Lecturer of Arts and Sciences at Illinois State in 2002, where she presented her studies titled “Changing Methods of Teaching, the Herbartians and Douglas Clay Ridgley, Master Teacher.” She also presented papers on a local and national level, as well as contributed articles and book reviews to the Annals of the Association of American Geographers, the Geographical Review and the Journal of Geography. Drawing upon an interest in reading when she was a student during World War II in England, she wrote the first part of her memoirs, titled “An English Geographer Remembers, Part One: The War Years, 1939-1945.” Dr. Miller was inducted into the Illinois State University College of Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame in 2009 and obtained a dissertation grant from the Society of Woman Geographers in 1961. Among her achievements, she is proudest to have started her own library and written her first book on local geography during high school. She credits her success to her late husband, Dr. George J.
