Stemming from this experience was Mr. Miller’s innate interest in electricity, and he worked as an electrician between 1969 and 1986 before delving into education. Focusing his attention on adult education and distance learning, he served as a regional director for adult education at the Regional Education Service Agency before being hired for the Berkeley County Schools in West Virgin- ia in 1996. There, he was the director of adult and community education from 1996 to 2008, and subsequently ended his career as an associate superintendent in 2010. Teaching adults under government and state programs, Mr. Miller enjoyed teaching adults about industrial electricity. Among the highlights of his career, he cites working for the Berkeley County Schools to be most fulfilling. Post-retirement, he worked with the assistant to set up programs to remain up to standards. With the encouragement of Mr. Miller, the assistant attended college and earned a master’s degree, and subsequently took over his position as associate superintendent. Attributing his success to his upbringing, Mr. Miller has always boasted an innate ability to take part in public speaking. He notes that he often participated in school plays and the choir, which opened the door to his teaching career. Humbled by his teaching experiences throughout the course of his career, he advises future educators to never quit on their goals, and there will always be areas to which one can progress in the field. Holding a master’s degree in science and management, Mr. Miller was named State Administrator of the Year for Adult Education and State Vocational Teacher of the Year in 1979.
