85 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION S andra Fernandez O’Hare initially had aspirations to become a translator for the United Nations in her youth. However, while her husband served as a naval officer, she traveled across the globe and thus, desired to delve into a profession in which she could travel. Finding teaching to be the perfect fit, she attended Marymount College and received a BA in 1962. After accruing many years in the field, she earned an MA from the University of San Francisco in 1980. She is a certified elementary and college teacher, as well as a bilingual and language development specialist. At the inception of her career in 1962, Ms. O’Hare taught in NewYork for two years before traveling abroad to Guam to teach adult education. Likewise, she has also taught extensively in both the United States and Spain at the Spanish Speaking Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Colegio Salesiano in Rota, Spain; the Alisal School District in Salinas, California; and the Liberty School in Petaluma, California. A former instructor at Chapman University and Santa Rosa Junior College, she concluded her career in 2005 after spending 20 years as a teacher at the Cinnabar Elementary School District. Post-retirement, she serves as a part-time substitute teacher for St. Vincent High School. In 1961, Ms. O’Hare translated a book, titled “Isabel la Católica,” and she has dedicated her time civically to the Adult Literacy League since 1996. Additionally, she has been a docent for the Petaluma Wetlands Alliance at Shollenberger Park since 2008, and previously spent time with the American Red Cross and the Boy Scouts of America. To remain abreast of developments in education, Ms. O’Hare is active with the National Education Association, the Club Hispano-Americano Petaluma, where she was past president, and the American Association of University Women, where she was past vice president. Furthermore, she aligned herself as a former area director for Delta Kappa Gamma. Renowned in her field, Ms. O’Hare received a Sarah D. Barder Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in 1990. She has also been celebrated extensively by Marquis Who’s Who with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
