86 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Oxford, Dr. Patterson earned master’s degrees from Harvard University and the University of Oxford, an MDiv from the Episcopal Theological School, a PhD from Harvard University, and an honorary DLitt from the University of the South. Honored by the National Endowment for the Humanities as a fellow in 1967-1968, Dr. Patterson has authored works regarding history, religion and literature. His book “King James and I and the Reunion of Christendom,” published in 1997, received the Albert C. Outler Prize from the American Society of Church History. He published “William Perkins and the Making of a Protestant England” in 2014, followed by “Thomas Fuller: Discovering England’s Religious Past” in 2018. He also wrote “The Liberal Arts at Sewanee: A History of Teaching and Learning at the University of the South” in 2009. Married to his beloved late wife Evelyn Byrd Hawkins for over 50 years, Dr. Patterson is proud to have four children and 10 grandchildren. D r. William Brown Patterson aspired to be a scholar and leader in academic and religious endeavors. While studying at the University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, he had as his tutor the literary historian and theologian C.S. Lewis. After two years at Oxford, Dr. Patterson entered the Episcopal Theological School and, following graduation, he was ordained to ministry. Thereafter, he began serving Episcopal parish churches part-time while continuing his academic pursuits. In 1963, Dr. Patterson became an assistant professor of history and a member of the humanities team of faculty members at Davidson College before being promoted to associate professor in 1966 and full professor in 1976. Hired by the University of the South in 1980, he was a professor of history until he retired in 2005. There, he served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1980 to 1991 and named Francis S. Houghteling Professor of History from 2001 to 2005.
