87 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION L earning to swim at the age of 8, Charles Edward Pemberton began teaching swimming lessons at 12 years old and discovered his passion for swimming and teaching. He subsequently pursued health, physical education and recreation while in college, and obtained a BS in mathematics and physical education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1965. Soon thereafter, he received a Master of Physical Education from the University of Kentucky in 1969. Notably, he completed doctoral coursework in human anatomy and mechanical aspects of motion at the University of Iowa in 1970. At the inception of his career in 1965, Mr. Pemberton was a mathematics teacher at Conner Middle School before becoming a health teacher at Alice Lloyd College. From there, he served as an aquatics director at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for three years while also serving Dacor, Inc., in Chicago as an advertising manager and district director. Later in his career, Mr. Pemberton was the director of the Hydro Help- Handicapped Swim Program at the University of Tennessee, aquatics teacher within the Clinton City School District and health teacher at Farragut Middle School, maintaining the role for 12 years. Mr. Pemberton has served as a consultant and teacher for Knoxville Pediatric Associates since 1981, and president and chief executive officer of Pemberton & Associates, Inc., since 1984. He is also the chief executive officer and primary instructor of AdventureSwim.com . Among the highlights of his career, he notes that a crowning achievement has been impacting students in a positive manner as a teacher. He also loves working with children and adults of all ages and abilities, including disabled swimmers. Mr. Pemberton is a former aquatics chairman of the Tennessee Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and is certified as an adapted aquatics water safety instruction through the American Red Cross. Expanding his expertise across the globe, he has also consulted in swimming instruction in Russia, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, China and Singapore. A former first lieutenant in the First Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, he earned a Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal.
