93 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION emeritus status in 2010. Commencing his career with Notre Dame as an assistant professor, he was elevated to the rank of full professor in 1991. He also served as chair of the Program of Liberal Studies and director of the Program in History and Philosophy of Science and the Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values. For six years, he was president of the Association for Core Texts and Courses, an international society devoted to the advancement of liberal education. Prior to his appointments at Notre Dame, Dr. Sloan served the University of Washington, Seattle School of Medicine as an instructor and assis- tant professor within the Department of Biomed- ical History. In his scientific career, he was an advanced research technician in deep sea biology at the U.S. Naval Undersea Laboratory, advanced research technician of plant physiology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and an expe- dition biologist on the Lusiad Expedition in 1963. Dr. Sloan holds a BS in zoology from the University of Utah, an MS in marine oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and an MPhil and PhD in philosophy from the University of California SanDiego. He has authored numerous publications throughout his career, sat on multiple editorial boards and presented at conferences. Dr. Sloan had named for him the Phillip R. Sloan Award from the Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values in 2010, given annually to an outstanding graduate student in the History and Philosophy of Science. He received the University Joyce Teaching Award in 2010, Presi- dential Award from the University of Notre Dame in 2004 and Medal of Merit from the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris in 1994. Dr. Sloan maintains affiliation with the History of Science Society, the Association for Core Texts and Courses, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
