William Childs Rense is a distinguished educator of geography and earth science who served Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania for nearly 25 years prior to his retirement in 2004. Growing up in an educational environment, Dr. Rense was attracted to climatology, physical geography and hydrology early on, and thereafter, honed his interests on academia. Holding a BA and an MA from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Dr. Rense also has a PhD in physical geography from Oregon State University. Prior to his tenure at Shippensburg, he was an instructor and assistant professor at the University of Southwestern Louisiana between 1968 and 1980. He has also authored several papers in his field, contributed an article to the World Book Encyclopedia and presented papers at numerous professional conferences. A member of the Association of American Geographers, the American Water Resources Association, the Pennsylvania Geographical Society and the Rocky Mountain Hydrologic Research Center, Dr. Rense enjoys traveling globally in his spare time. Notably, he has taken treks to such mountain ranges as the Himalayas and the Karakoram Mountains of Asia. I ntroduced to electrical engineering through an apprenticeship, Dr. Shepherd went on to attend the University of London, where he earned a BS in engineering. Relocating to Canada, he received a MASc from the University of Toronto and commenced teaching at the University of Manitoba. Soon thereafter, Dr. Shepherd returned to England and served as a lecturer at the Royal Military College of Science before beginning his tenure at the University of Bradford in 1967. In Bradford, he served as a reader turned professor, as well as dean of engineering and pro vice-chancellor until his departure from the institution in 1993. During this time, he also achieved a PhD and DSc in engineering from the University of London. Thereafter, he taught in the United States as a professor at Ohio University before retiring in 2005. A chartered engineer in the United Kingdom, Dr. Shepherd has also lent his time to the board of directors of Yorkshire Cancer Research and has authored or co-authored numerous books and scientific papers. Today, he notably holds six patents in his field and is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. WILLIAM SHEPHERD, PHD
