A professor of history since 1994 and Regents’ Professor in Arts and Sciences since 2012 at UNM, she has conducted research and written extensively about American Indian and comparative indigenous history, cultural intermediaries and the modern history of Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Native America. Since 2003, she has also dedicated her time as a research fellow at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. A recent president of the Western History Association, Dr. Connell- Szasz has also taught Scottish, English and American students domestically and abroad, has authored myriad publications, sat on editorial boards and has been an invited speaker. In recognition of her excellence, she has earned the 2016 William H. and Marjory Bell Chambers Endowed Award for Excellence in History, the 2000 American History Appreciation Award from the Western History Association, and the 2008-2009 UNM College of Arts and Sciences Award for Teaching Excellence, among other accolades. REGENTS PROFESSOR IN ARTS AND SCIENCES, RESEARCH FELLOW University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM Millennium Magazine Featured Listee MARGARET CONNELL-SZASZ, PHD DOROTHY ANN TAYLOR SMALBEIN S upported by a BA in education and MEd in counseling from the University of Central Florida from 1971 and 1978, respectively, Dor- othy Ann Taylor Smalbein has accrued nearly 35 years of experi- ence in education. Most recently, she served as a guidance counselor at Pine Trail Elementary School through the Volusia County School Board in Florida from 1978 until her retirement in 2000. Additionally, Ms. Smalbein taught as a substitute teacher from 1966 to 1978. During her tenure in education, Ms. Smalbein hosted an annual, school-wide program that allowed students to meet with prominent figures in several professions, such as doctors, lawyers, surgeons and police officers. She also founded the Terrific Kid Program at Pine Trail Elementary School and notably participated in and led workshops and parenting groups. Maintaining affiliation with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Ms. Smalbein received the DAR Award for Citizenship after her own elementary school graduation. She also received an Outstanding Service Award from the Volusia County Counselors in 1979. She is a former sunshine chair and treasurer of the Volusia Association for Counseling and Development.
