120 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING D rawing upon more than four decades of professional experience in corrosion engineering, Virgil Lloyd Johnston is a dedicated utility consultant and former engineer, who is currently retired. Serving the Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company in Kansas City, Missouri, for a resounding 29 years, he ended his tenure with the company as chief corrosion engineer in 1986, which he cites as a career highlight. Earlier, he served Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company as a supervising engineer, area superintendent, corrosion engineer and corrosion inspector beginning in 1957. At the inception of his career in 1948, he was an electrical construction lineman for various contractors. Supported by electrical engineering coursework from International Correspondence Schools in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Mr. Johnston has also worked as a utility consultant for the Arizona Corporation Commission beginning in 1986. In 1990, he was also chairman of the Arizona Corrosion Correlating Committee. Formerly serving with the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947, he is notable for being a 33rd° Master Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite, and member of Shriners, where he was the Commander of the Ararat and El Zaribah Shrine Temples’ Legion of Honor Units. A past chairman and Arizona secretary of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers in 1990, Mr. Johnston has received numerous accolades throughout his longstanding career. The recipient of the 1982 Service Award from the Operating Section of the American Gas Association, he also earned a Recognition for Special Service from the Southern Gas Association in 1980 and was named Professional of the Year by the State of Arizona in 1988, where he was selected as number one out of 40,000 state employees. Other awards to Mr. Johnston’s credit have included a 1985 Award of Merit, as well as two Legion of Honor awards from Shriners from 1980 and 1990. A native of Carl, Iowa, Mr. Johnston currently resides in Peoria, Arizona. Married to his late wife Laverne since 1956, he has two daughters, Deborah and Karen. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, reading and computers. He was featured in the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the West in 1992.
