130 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING T he president and founder of Solar Design Associates in Harvard, Massachusetts, since 1974, Steven Strong draws upon an early interest in electricity and engineering. In the mid-1970s, the interest in solar engineering was in its early stages and Mr. Strong developed a lifelong commitment to develop a creative response to solar design that continues to the present day. Comprised of licensed professional engineers and registered architects, Solar Design Associates integrates solar energy into building designs and aids architects in the design of more efficient buildings. When Solar Design Associates came to fruition, the company designed custom solar residencies. From there, the company transitioned to help architects design better buildings and provide solar engineering to power those buildings. Solar Design Associates laid the foundation for the mainstream application of solar energy and thus, has garnered an international reputation. Beginning in the business shadowing his father at project sites at the age of 8, Mr. Strongwas the first child in his neighborhood to have a treehouse, which he wired himself with electricity. Since that time, Mr. Strong has excelled in the world of electrical engineering, and earlier in his career, worked on the Energy Systems Group on the Alaskan Pipelines Project as a junior engineer. As a testament to his success, Mr. Strong was named Environmental Hero of the Planet by Time Magazine in the 1990s and had an article in Time Magazine written in his honor in 2007. Likewise, Connecticut College bestowed upon him the Inherit the Earth Award. Mr. Strong has always valued the work he has provided to the world in integrating solar energy to technology.
