17 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine E xposed to the construction industry from a young age, Dr. Annie Mecias- Murphy was inspired by the resilience and skill of her father, a construction worker who immigrated to the United States in 1969. Working toward the American dream, Dr. Mecias-Murphy’s father introduced her to the diversified nature of the construction business, and she soon began working part-time during the summers. Although her PhD from Barry University is in counseling, she always returned to the construction industry, finding immense opportunity. Since 2005, Dr. Mecias-Murphy has been the co-owner and president of JA&M Developing Corporation, a construction company located in Pembroke Pines, Florida. She attends workshops and pursues continuing education. She is actively involved as a member of the executive committee, legislative committee and board member of the Builders and Contractors Association, a board member of the Boys and Girls Club, a board member of the E.P.I.C Foundation, and a volunteer of Metro Life Church in Miami, citing her faith to be a significant factor to her success. Dr. Mecias-Murphy explains that the construction industry is comprised of several components, ranging from engineering to architecture to technology, among other areas of study. STEM programs typically do not realize how much the construction industry is comprised in the areas of technology, engineering and mathematics, and what a viable first choice of career the industry truly is. No moment is dull in light of these components, creating an optimal work environment for those wishing to enter the trade. Dr. Mecias-Murphy’s most current publication is Chapter One of The Florida Contractors Manual, titled “Business Planning and Organization,” in the 2021 revised edition, set to be printed by July 2021. In 2005, she co-authored an article in The Family Journal, titled “Solution Focused Treatment of Migraine Headaches.” She was named Woman of the Year in 2014, and the company received recognition for Excellence in Construction between 2016 and 2019.
