A former assistant director of admissions at Mount Holyoke College from 1966 to 1971, during this time she attended Indiana State University and obtained an MA in 1970. Subsequent to earning a master’s degree, Ms. Rose attained her first role with the White House in Washington as assistant director of correspondence to First Lady Pat Nixon from 1971 to 1972. Remaining with the White House staff for 22 years, she served First Lady Pat Nixon and First Lady Betty Ford as head of scheduling and projects before temporarily relocating to the U.S. Department of Justice as a special assistant to the Assistant Attorney General within the Office for Improvements in the Administration of Justice and the Justice Management Division between 1977 and 1981. Returning to the White House, she was chief of staff to First Lady Barbara Bush and assistant to the vice president of George H.W. Bush between 1981 and 1989. Remarkably, she was promoted to deputy assistant to President George H.W. Bush for four years. Ms. Rose retired from the White House in 1993 and, for the following five years, she was commissioner to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. She has been a trustee of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum since 1994, having previously served on the board of directors of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. In recognition of her outstanding accomplish- ments, Ms. Rose earned an honorary LHD from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2002. Likewise, she received Distinguished Alumni Awards from Indiana State University and Earlham College in 1991 and 1992, respectively. She cites a career highlight was when an idea she proposed to the first lady was discussed with the president. The president took her advice, noting that her proposal was brilliant. I nterested in government and education from a young age, Susan Porter Rose attended Earlham College for her undergraduate studies, earning a BA in 1963. Soon thereafter, she was employed as a staff assistant to Congressman Richard L.
