Currently, Dr. Whitehurst is a physician for the U.S. Space Force, a branch of the U.S. Department of the Air Force. A member of the U.S. Air Force since 1990, he has also served as a civilian family physician and flight surgeon for various Air Force bases in Virginia. Likewise, he has dedicated his time lecturing at the University of Virginia and University of North Dakota, and also lends his expertise to the Pikes Peak Council with the Boy Scouts of America. The recipient of numerous Meritorious Service Medals, Dr. Whitehurst also received the Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Star and Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. In scouting, he is a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow and a recipient of the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver. D rawing upon a BS in nuclear engineer- ing from the University of Virginia, Dr. Lawrence Rowe Whitehurst was introduced to medicine after spend- ing time with physicians at a local hospital. Finding that these professionals were also scientists who exhibited determination and intelligence, the medical profession appealed to the scientist and humanitarian within him. Attending the Medical College of Virginia Com- monwealth University, he earned an MD in 1974. After completing his residency, Dr. Whitehurst was commissioned in the U.S. Army and sought to become a flight surgeon. First serving as a family physician at Fox Army Hospital, Dr. Whitehurst was offered entrance to flight surgeon school and graduated as valedictorian in his class. He served as a chief flight surgeon at the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory for two years before serving on various bases throughout the United States and abroad in increasingly responsible capacities.
