Starting out as a staff nurse in the operating room of the House of Good Samaritan Hospital, a role she held for two years, Ms. Chalk subsequently transferred to the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville as head nurse of the neurosurgery operating room. Departing from the University of Virginia Hospital in 1975, Ms. Chalk commenced her tenure at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she was a clinical coordinator of the neurosurgery operating room for the following 25 years. She subsequently retired as a medical and surgical nurse in 2000. Since then, Ms. Chalk has spent her time volunteering at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital’s Heart Hospital and has also been a volunteer for the Parkinson’s Support Group. Since 2003, she has further sat on the board of directors of the Parkinson Disease Association in Virginia Beach. Maintaining affiliation with numerous organizations over the course of her career, Ms. Chalk served four years as national treasurer of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, as well as publicity chair of the Southeastern Chapter of Virginia, president of the Southeastern Chapter of Virginia and chair of the Admission Committee between 1973 and 1982. As a testament toher success andachievements in the field of nursing, Ms. Chalk received a Certificate of Merit from the Parkinson’s Disease Association of Virginia in 2001. Likewise, she has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, andWho’s Who of AmericanWomen. She has lent her expertise to myriad articles in professional journals sponsored by various neurosurgical organizations. Additionally, Ms. Chalk is renowned as a co-editor of “Core Curriculum for Operating Room Nurses- Neurosurgery.” O riginally considering a career as a dietitian, Barbara A. Chalk switched gears, set her sights on nursing and obtained a diploma in nursing from the House of Good Samaritan Hospital in Watertown, New York, in 1957.
