192 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS D r. Benjamin Cowles Hammett has boasted an interest in psychology from a young age. Taking a plethora of psychology classes during his undergraduate years at Stanford University, he received a BS in 1957. From there, he pursued earned a PhD from the University of North Carolina in 1969. While studying toward his doctorate degree, he served as a staff psychologist at the Children’s Psychiatric Center in Butner, North Carolina, from 1965 to 1967. Thereafter, he was a senior psychologist and director of research at the VA Treatment Center for Children in Richmond, Virginia, as well as an assistant professor of child psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1968 to 1971. In 1972, Dr. Hammett opened his own private practice in clinical psychology in Palo Alto, California. Maintaining the practice for two decades, he then served one year as a research psychologist before retiring in the early 1990s. During his tenure, he was also an instructor of psychology at the Western Graduate School of Psychology for seven years and an affiliate staff member at the O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, California, for four years. Involved civically as well, Dr. Hammett has been a volunteer for the Bay Area Action and Peninsula Conservation Center since 1983 and a member of the California Academy of Sciences since 1987. Formerly serving on the board of trustees of the National Parks and Conservation Association, he was also a first lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol in 1969. Likewise, he has maintained status with the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto as past vice president and president of the board of directors, treasurer, research affiliate and research associate. A co-author of chapters to two books in psychology, Dr. Hammett considers his work with alcoholics to be a crowning career highlight. Working weekends with a therapist in group counseling for alcoholism, he used transactional analysis and Gestalt therapy to treat and connect with patients. In light of his success, Dr. Hammett received the Avenidas Lifetime of Achievement Award in 2013. He was also a grantee of the National Institute of Mental Health in 1970.
