From1957 to 1958, he interned at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, and subsequently completed a residency in surgery at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis between 1958 and 1963. Dr. Heimburger then served as a Thoracic Surgery Fellow at Leeds University Hospital in England, 1963 to 1964, pursuing his professional career in both academia and surgery. In 1964, he became an instructor at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis and was soon promoted to clinical associate professor until departing from the medical center. In 1966, he accepted a position in private practice in Evansville, Indiana, and served on the medical staff both at St. Mary and Deaconess Hospitals in Evansville, serving as chief of staff for one year each at both hospitals. Dr. Heimburger subsequently retired in 1998. A diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Heimburger also served as president of the Vanderburgh County Medical Society in Evansville from 1977 to 1978. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as president of the Indiana Chapter from 1977 to 1978. To remain abreast of developments in the field, Dr. Heimburger maintained membership with the Central Surgical Association, International Cardiovascular Society, Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Midwest Surgical Society. In his spare time, Dr. Heimburger enjoys philately, known as the collecting of postage stamps. He has been a member of the American Philatelic Society and was named a Philatelic Champion of Champions in 2008. To attest to his legacy, Dr. Heimburger has been selected for inclusion in myriad editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the World. B orn on September 28, 1931, in Tsinan, China, Dr. Irvin LeRoy Heimburger is a distinguished surgeon who had accrued more than 40 years of experience in medicine prior to his retirement in 1998. Matriculating in Drury College, he earned a BA in 1953.
