195 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS U pon reaching the second grade, Joanne Flip Hirst desired to become a registered nurse. To prepare for her career, she attended the Junior College of Albany, where she earned an Associate of Applied Science in 1984. From there, she attended the State University of New York at Utica, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1990 and a Master of Science in Nursing in 1997. Shortly after obtaining her Adult Nurse Practitioner certification, she worked part-time for Dr. Lorraine E. Davis Family Practice in 1998. Ms. Hirst retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in 2011 after 36 years, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She had been recently serving at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Warrior Transition Brigade from 2007 to 2011. She worked as a nurse case manager for wounded soldiers returning from Afghanistan. Prior, she was in Germany on active duty from 2004 to 2005. Ms. Hirst worked for Canajoharie Health Center in Canajoharie, New York, before she finished her degree, and she was a public health nurse at the Schoharie County Health Department, charge and team leader at the Community Hospital of Schoharie County, and staff nurse in primary care at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, New York. Ms. Hirst is a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. When asked of her career highlights, she cites traveling to third world countries for humanitarian efforts as a crowning achievement. She notes that she visited Honduras to provide medical care, where she treated more than 1,000 individuals. As a testament to her success in the field of nursing. Ms. Hirst has been featured in several editions of Who’s Who Among Human Service Professionals and Who’s Who in American Nursing. Married to the late Charles Hirst since 1978, she is the proud mother of two children, grandmother of five grandchildren and great-grandmother of two great- grandchildren. Born in New York, she currently resides in Inverness, Florida, and enjoys quilting, sewing, reading and doing crafts in her spare time.
