Board certified in neurological surgery, Dr. Ostdahl has presented at numerous symposia and conferences between 1971 and 2010 and has authored book chapters to “Neurosurgery” in 1985 and “The Drez Operation” in 1996. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and previously maintained membership on the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Division of the American Trauma Society from 1989 to 2005. Earning several accolades in his field, Dr. Ostdahl received the Merck Index Award in 1969, as well as the Physicians Recognition Award from the American Medical Association. Outside of his vocational efforts, he is an active supporter of the World Wildlife Fund, displaying his passion for preserving the Earth’s climate and animals. D r. Roger H. Ostdahl was inspired to enter medicine by the influence of his uncle, Dr. Richard DeWall, who was the inventor of the DeWall bubble oxygenator. Spending one year in Switzerland as an exchange student in medicine, Dr. Ostdahl went on to Duke University, where he earned a BA in chemistry, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, in 1969 and an MD in 1973. For the following six years, he completed internships and residencies in neurological surgery, where he was further enamored with the workings of the human brain. He commenced his medical career as a neurological surgeon at the Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; the Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania; Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg; and Carlisle Hospital in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Remaining in the latter role for three decades, Dr. Ostdahl also served as chief of surgery at Holy Spirit Hospital while also serving as a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University’s College of Medicine in 1988. From1994 to 1998, he was chairman of the surgical quality DR. ROGER H.
