205 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS A t the age of 12, Dr. Elizabeth Anne Ouellette desired to be a biochemist. Drawing upon a background in violin composition, she discovered the interconnection between science and music, and has thus applied her knowledge of music to her understanding of medicine. Upon the suggestion of a friend at the age of 16, Dr. Ouellette sought to become a doctor, noting that she preferred to work with people as opposed to in a laboratory. Attaining a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, cum laude, from Texas A&M University in 1974, she subsequently received an MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1978. Certified in hand surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Ouellette began her career in academia as an assistant professor, associate professor and full professor within the School of Medicine at the University of Miami between 1985 and 2007. Named professor emeritus in 2007, she continues to serve the university as a volunteer professor. Additionally, she has been a physician at the Ouellette Group and Physicians for the Hand since 2010 and chief of hand surgery and director of the Hand Fellowship Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital since 1991. Previously, she served the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute as chief of orthopaedics between 1995 and 2007. Dr. Ouellette has contributed several articles to medical journals throughout her career and has maintained affiliation with the American Association for the Surgery of the Hand since 1993. Previously a president and vice president of the Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society, she also associated with the American Orthopaedic Association on their bylaws committee and served as vice president of the Kiros Hand Society. In 2002, she received a Master of Business Administration from the School of Business at the University of Miami. In light of her outstanding contributions to medicine and academia, Dr. Ouellette earned a Teaching Award from the School of Medicine at the University of Miami in 1998.
