207 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS A pioneer in the field of cardiovascularmedicine as it related to space flight, Dr. WilliamJ. Rowe accruedmore than 30 years of experience prior to his retirement in 1993. A former clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences beginning in 1962, he has also lent his expertise to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center as chairman of the Department of Medicine and the Northwest Ohio Heart Association’s advisory committee for cardiac rehabilitation as chief between 1979 and 1983. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and a fellow of the British Interplanetary Society and American College of Nutrition, Dr. Rowe is well-versed in the study of adrenaline and magnesium deficiencies in astronauts, and he was the first to publish the necessity of developing a subcutaneous magnesium product and delivery device for space missions. Spending more than 20 years studying cardiac abnormalities, he was also the first to publish the existence of elevated adrenaline levels in space and devised two space flight syndromes: The Apollo 15 Space Syndrome and the Neil Armstrong Syndrome. Likewise, he was the first to show how inhalation of moon dust in the lunar module contributed to severe hypertension. Dr. Rowe has published approximately 70 papers as sole author over a 20- year period and has been invited to present his work overseas in locations such as Europe, Japan, Dubai and China. He has delivered 20-minute long videos to international conferences regarding his study of the cardiac complications Neil Armstrong experienced while on the moon. The recipient of an MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1954, Dr. Rowe is a past council member of the American College of Nutrition and maintained affiliation with the American Medical Society and the International Society for the Development of Research on Magnesium. Attributing his success to his curiosity, passion and creativity, he has been listed in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the World.
