A prior educator of ophthalmology, he served the University of Colorado in Denver as an assistant and associate professor between 1977 and 1984 before opening his private practice. Since 2005, Dr. Sprague has served as the chairman of the de Beaumont Foundation, an organization founded in 1998 that focuses on improving health at the community level in public health advocacy regardless of an individual’s social or economic status. First serving on the foundation’s board of directors beginning in 1999, he was also the foundation’s first chief executive officer from 2005 until his retirement in 2015. Alongside his primary endeavors, he was a clinical associate professor of ophthalmology at Georgetown University and was chief of ophthalmology at Denver General Hospital. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, from Harvard University, Dr. Sprague earned an MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969. He completed a two-year internship and residency in internal medicine at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, and later served as an EIS officer for the Centers for Disease Control. Thereafter, he completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Colorado and pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at Columbia University. Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1977, Dr. Sprague served on active duty with the Public Health Service for two years during the VietnamWar in Atlanta and was in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1977 to 1986. As a testament to his success, he was highlighted in the first edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare in 1996, and the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest in 1992.
