A certified American Red Cross water safety instructor trainer, she is a spokeswoman, fitness ambassador, Goodwill ambassador and keynote speaker. She developed the Kids Aquatic Re-Entry for youth at-risk juvenile justice program in 2008 and spearheaded WETS 4 VETS, a holistic program to help veterans re- enter civilian life. The author of 16 books on aquatics, Dr. Katz was an honoree of Legends of the Maccabiah in 2018 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition in 2014. The recipient of the eponymously-named Dr. Jane Katz Cross-Training Award from the U.S. Water Fitness Association in 2005, she was also voted One of the 25 Most Powerful People in the World of Aquatics by Aquatics International Magazine in 2005. G rowing up in a Jewish community in New York’s Lower East Side, Dr. Jane Katz has been internationally recognized for her dedication to and education of swimming. Participating in the Maccabiah Games since 1957, she notably served as team captain for the USA Swim Team at the 2011 Maccabiah Games in Vienna. Two years later, she won 11 individual gold medals in her age group at the 2013 Israel Maccabiah Games, as well as two medals in team relay events. She was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 2011. Dr. Katz has taught swimming for more than five decades and cites as the highlights of her career hearing the shrieks of joy when her students learn how to float for the first time. Noting that “water is the great equalizer,” Dr. Katz most recently taught as a professor of health and physical education at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York from 1989 until 2019.
