239 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine LAW AND LAW ENFORCEMENT pursuing legal studies at Indiana University. He received a JD in 1956 and was subsequently admitted to practice law by the Indiana State Bar. Mr. Blackwell remained with Eli Lilly & Company until his retirement in 1990. He previously served Eli Lilly International Corp. as an attorney and assistant secretary from 1962 to 1970, assistant general counsel from 1970 to 1977, and secretary and general counsel from 1977 to 1990. During this time, he was also chairman of the Indiana Export Financial Authority between 1988 and 1989. Mr. Blackwell has further been admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of the U.S. and the U.S. Court of International Trade. Prior to his legal career, Mr. Blackwell served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps from 1946 to 1948. Civically involved as well, he has been the director of the Indianapolis Indians baseball team and member of the board of directors of Happy Hollow Children’s Camp since 1967. Furthermore, he has served the American Red Cross in myriad capacities, including as member of the national board of governors, and board of directors and executive committee of the Indianapolis chapter. He also served as president between 1968 and 1971. In light of his outstanding achievements, Mr. Blackwell was the recipient of the C.J. Lynn Outstanding Red Cross Volunteer Award from the American Red Cross in 1989. He was also named Sagamore of the Wabash by the Governor of Indiana in 1988. He has maintained affiliation with the American Bar Association, the Indiana and Indianapolis Bar Associations, the English Speaking Union, the University of Illinois Alumni Association and the Indiana Historical Society, among other organizations. Married with three children and four grandchildren, Mr. Blackwell enjoys traveling, hunting, fishing and woodworking. I nspired by his uncle to enter the field of law, Henry Barlow Blackwell, JD, attended the University of Illinois, where he earned a BS in 1952. Hired by Merchants National Bank in Indianapolis soon thereafter, he served as an assistant auditor until 1953.
