240 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine LAW AND LAW ENFORCEMENT G rowing up on a Texas farm, Richard N. Countiss was taught the value of hard work froma young age. Additionally, he was inspired by his grandmother to pursue an education, understanding the importance of earning good grades and obtaining a secure job. He received a Bachelor of Science in business from McMurry College in 1958 and, three years later, earned a JD, with honors, from the Methodist School of Law. Subsequently, he was admitted to practice law by the State of Texas. First serving with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, Mr. Countiss is proud to have helped in achieving the integration of the University of Alabama, as well as in appellate decisions that have clarified the law. Opening his own practice in 1962, titled the Countiss Law Firm, he also served as a district judge for four years and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit judge for nine years. Closing his practice in 2010, he continued to serve as a criminal justice attorney in San Jacinto County, Texas, from 2010 until his retirement in 2013. Alongside his principal endeavors, Mr. Countiss was also an adjunct professor at the Southern Methodist University Law School, instructor of trial and appellate procedure at the University of Houston, and chair of the judicial section and dean of the Judicial Continuing Legal Education College at the New Judges College with the U.S. Supreme Court. A certified senior judge by the Texas Supreme Court, he has also affiliated himself with the Cold Spring Methodist Church. Subsequent to receiving a law degree, Mr. Countiss was on active duty with the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1962, and served in the 49th Armored Division of the U.S. Army Reserves from 1963 to 1968. He was a member of the Texas State Bar Association, state treasurer of the Texas Intercollegiate Student Association and chair of the Spearman Chamber of Commerce. Listed as a Texas Monthly Super Lawyer in Houston Magazine, Mr. Countiss intends to continue enjoying his retirement in the near future. RICHARD N.
