248 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine LAW AND LAW ENFORCEMENT A ttracted to law due to her desire to change the way in which people were treated, Marjorie Anne McDiarmid graduated cum laude from the Columbia University School of Law with a JD in 1970. Attending Harvard Law School soon thereafter, she received a Master of Laws in 1974. She served as a deputy consumer advocate for the Department of Consumer Affairs in New York for two years before teaching at Harvard Law School for two years. Relocating to Seattle, she was a staff attorney for the Misdemeanor Division of the Public Defender Association from 1974 to 1975, where she was then promoted to supervising attorney of the Juvenile Division, supervising chief trial attorney and acting public defender. She then moved to the Legal Services Corporation, where she was deputy regional director in Seattle and regional director in the Northern Virginia Region. Beginning her tenure at the West Virginia University College of Law in 1986, Ms. McDiarmid first served as an associate professor. Holding the role for three years, she then served as a full professor and associate dean for academic affairs. Since 2002, she has been the Steptoe & Johnson Professor of Law and Technology, and since 2005, the university research integrity officer. Admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 2006, Ms. McDiarmid is licensed to practice in West Virginia, Washington and New York. She has been the treasurer of the Legal Aid of West Virginia Board of Directors since 2012, member of the Judicial Commission on Alimony Guidelines since 2001 and member of the board of directors of the Center for Computer Aided Legal Instruction (CALI) since 2006, among other roles. The recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Pro Bono Award from the West Virginia State Bar, Ms. McDiarmid also earned the 2010 Star Award and 2008 Hope Award from the Legal Aid of West Virginia, and was named a West Virginia Wonder Woman by West Virginia Living Magazine. Furthermore, she was recognized as a DistinguishedWomen in Law for Work in the Public Sector by WVU College of Law Women’s Law Caucus.
