McConathy achieved a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Oklahoma. Known for his discovery of lipid-binding proteins associated with the lipid transport system, he is a renowned member of his field backed by numerous years of professional experience. Most recently, from 2002 to 2014, he served as president of LipoMedics, Ltd. in Fort Worth, Texas. Fromhis years of work in research and education, Dr. McConathy’s advice to those entering the field is to have perseverance in your choices and be strong-willed in your efforts. He commenced his career as a postdoctoral fellow at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in the cardiovascular section from 1966 to 1971 and in the Lipoprotein Laboratory from 1971 to 1974. He then went on to be a staff scientist in the laboratory until 1975, assistant member until 1981 and associate member from 1978 to 1991. In 1985, Dr. McConathy joined the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, where he served the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as an adjunct associate professor until 1992. In 1992, he moved onto the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, where until 2007, he served as associate professor and director of the Department of Medicine’s Division of Clinical Research and as an adjunct associate professor within the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. From 1993 to 1995, he was an acting chairman, and later a professor within the Department of Internal Medicine at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center from 2007 to 2011. Dr. McConathy is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American College of Surgeons, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, American Federation for Clinical Research and Sigma Xi. He is also a fellow of the American Heart Association’s Council on Arteriosclerosis. A contributor to nearly 250 articles and abstracts and approximately 150 professional publications, Dr. McConathy was a participant of the USA-USSR Health Professional Exchange Program in 1979.
