Nusim earned a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from the City College of NewYork in 1957. Attracted toMerck & Co. after graduation, Dr. Nusim was hired as a researcher in chemical engineering research and development, a position he held until 1968. During this time, he attended New York University and received a Master of Chemical Engineering and PhD in 1960 and 1967, respectively. Remaining with Merck for the majority of his career, Dr. Nusim served the pharmaceutical company as a section manager, technical services manager, manufacturing manager, director of subsidiary projects, executive director of Latin American, Far East and Near East operations, and executive director and licensee of operations worldwide. He retired from Merck in 1994. Subsequent to his tenure with Merck, Dr. Nusim was vice president of manufacturing and operations at Therics, Inc., and also served as president of his own company, S.H. Nusim & Associates, until his retirement. During his career, Dr. Nusim has developed U.S. and foreign patents on the continuous manufacture of halogenated acetone, and aided in the development of “clean room” concepts for API manufacturing and sophisticated training techniques for sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing. Enjoying the technical challenges that his jobs offered, he also enjoyed cooperatingwith colleagues and clients, noting that hewas always interested in the ability of others to communicate their skillsets. He co-authored and edited the 2005 “Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients: Development, Manufacturing and Regulation,” as well as its second edition in 2008. Dr. Nusim cites the most important moment was helping to bring the abortion pill into the United States, emphasizing that it was a poignant instance in U.S. and pharmaceutical history. He also says that marrying his wife Marcia is a crowning achievement; they have been married for 60 years. Additionally, Dr. Nusim has two children, David and Jill, and four grandchildren. He is a former board director of the New Jersey section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and maintained affiliation with the American Chemical Society. STANLEY H.
