He was the co-founder and chair of the Madison, New Jersey, chapter of Amnesty International from 1976 to 1980, and was a founding member and board of directors member of the Virginia Hunger Foundation from 1992 to 1995. Punctuating these appointments, he was the co-founder and convener for the Virginia Congress on Hunger from 1987 to 1993. Since 2015, Dr. Barton has been a board member for Life Net Health, Inc., a proud position of his as he serves on behalf of his daughter Katie, an organ donor. He has also worked with the indigenous native community of Virginia and walked the journey toward federal recognition. Six Virginia Tribes received recognition from the United States government in 2018. He received the 2020 Ecumenical Service Recognition Award from the 224th meeting of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA. D rawing upon his interest in the state of human behavior and interaction, Rev. Dr. Jonathan M. Barton decided to pursue theology in light of his favorite psychologists. Obtaining a BA in psychology from Kean College in 1974, he went on to complete an MDiv at Drew University in 1978 and, later on, a Doctor of Ministry degree at Union University in 2014. He was ordained to ministry by the Presbyterian Church in 1981. Retired since 2018, Dr. Barton served as a general minister for the Virginia Council of Churches in Richmond for 18 years. Prior, he was the regional director of the Church World Service office in Richmond from 1985 to 2000, for whom he also served as associate regional director in Rocky Hill, New Jersey, from 1983 to 1985. A former consultant for the World Hunger Education Service and assistant to the National Coordinator for the National Committee for World Food Day in Washington, he also served the United Presbyterian Church of the USA, Hunger Program for four years.
