At the inception of his career, he served the Mennonite Central Committee in Algiers, Algeria, from 1960 to 1962 before becoming the peace secretary of the General Conference Mennonite Church in Newton, Kansas, a role he held until 1965. From there, he was the director of Africa and the Middle East for the Mennonite Central Committee in Akron, Pennsylvania, for 10 years. From 1975 to 1980, Mr. Preheim served as the director of Asia for the Mennonite Central Committee in Akron, while simultaneously serving as the chairman of the general board of directors of the General Conference Mennonite Church beginning in 1974. In 1980, he was the general secretary of the General Conference Mennonite Church in Newton and subsequently became the coordinator of resource development for the Mennonite Central Committee, a role he still holds today. Alongside his church-related endeavors, Mr. Preheim began serving as a manager of a nonprofit used bookstore with donated books and volunteers in 2002 until ending his tenure in 2012. Likewise, he is a past board member of Habitat for Humanity. Among the highlights of his career, he is proud of laying the foundation for the merger of the General Conference Mennonite Church and the Mennonite Church in 2002 – the merged churches are now known as Mennonite USA. The recipient of an Outstanding Alumnus Award from Bethel College, Mr. Preheim enjoys riding his bicycle and playing tennis in his spare time. He married Marion Kathryn Keeney in 1958, with whom he shared five children and five grandchildren. He married Norma Johnson in 1998. He has been highlighted in four editions of Who’s Who in America between 1994 and 1998, as well as the fourth edition of Who’s Who in Religion in 1992. E ncouraged by his high school and college teachers to pursue a life of ministry work, Vern Quincy Preheim attended Freeman Junior College, where he earned an Associate of Arts in 1956.
