30 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT D rawing on chalkboards at the age of 6, Leanne Marlow Castillo has always held a deep passion for and love of art. Drawing upon a certificate in commercial design from Art Instruction, Inc., in 1953, she is notable for preserving the history of the hobos of Britt, Iowa, as a celebration of the American traveling workers. Impressively, 30 of her hobo kings and queens oil portraits were on display in the Horse Hospital Gallery in London for one month in 2013. Opening her art gallery in Britt in 2016, titled the Hobo Art Gallery, Ms. Castillo is renowned for her conservation of hobos in Britt, including every king and queen crowned in Britt from 1990 to 2013. Continuing her artistic career at art fairs in the 1980s, she also began painting hobos and completed miniature paintings of barns. Subsequently, she moved on to sketching charcoal portraits at art shows, fairs, festivals and Renaissance celebrations. She has completed over 720 charcoal sketches in 15 years. While honing her skills in art, Ms. Castillo also served as a licensed nurse in Iowa between 1980 and 2003. After receiving a degree in nursing from Iowa Lakes Community College in 1980, she served as a staff nurse at the Algona Good Samaritan Home for three years and a charge nurse at the Westview Care Center for the following three years. From 1986 to 1987, she was a charge nurse at the Pinal County Nursing Center in Florence, Arizona, before returning to Britt and the Westview Care Center from 1987 until her retirement in 2003. Chairing the Britt Hobo Day Art Show from 1988 to 1997 and from 2000 to 2001, Ms. Castillo won Best of Show at the Hobo Day Art Show in 1989 and the Belmond Art Arcade in 1993. She is a present member of IA Artists. Despite her accolades, she is most humbled by an interview she gave to Bull Geist from CBS’ “Sunday Morning News,” in which she discussed her artwork and they witnessed the unveiling of her newest hobo painting.
