37 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D rawing upon a bachelor’s degree in English and master’s degree in communications, both from Stanford University, David Vokes Mitchell is a retired reporter who previously worked for the Point Reyes Light newspaper from 1984 until his retirement in 2005. Working as an editor and publisher for the newspaper during this period, he previously served the newspaper from 1975 to 1981 with punctuating appointments at the San Francisco Examiner, where he was a reporter for two years. Earlier in his career, Mr. Mitchell was an editor for the Sebastopol Times, reporter for the Union Democrat and reporter for the Council Bluffs Nonpareil. He commenced his career in 1968 as an instructor at Upper Iowa College. Mr. Mitchell is proudest of receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service from Columbia University for an investigation he conducted into the Synanon, as well as for covering the wars in Central America for the San Francisco Examiner. In light of his achievements in journalism, he has been the recipient of numerous regional, state and national awards between 1973 and 2005. Most recently, he earned the Cervi Award for lifetime accomplishments as an editor from the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors in 2014. Mr. Mitchell has maintained membership in the California Newspaper Publishers Association, where he twice served as director from 1985 to 1986 and again from 1998 to 1999. Demonstrating versatility in his field, he also authored “The Light of Synanon” in 1980, which was made into a CBS movie titled “Attack on Fear.” Furthermore, he published “The Light on the Coast: 65 Years of News Big and Small as Reported in the Point Reyes Light” in 2013. A native of San Francisco, Mr. Mitchell currently resides in Point Reyes Station, California, and enjoys photography and writing in his spare time. To attest to his success, he was listed in the first edition of Who’s Who in the Media and Communication and the 26th edition of Who’s Who in the West, both in 1997. Additionally, he received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019 and was named a Top Professional by Marquis Who’s Who in 2020.
