Interested in art from a formative age, she used clay from stream banks to create small figures in her youth. Earning a BA from Vassar College in 1961 after taking studio courses in stone carving with Prix de Rome winner Concetta Scaravaglione, she completed two years of coursework at the Art Students’ League in New York and studied abroad for nine months at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, Italy. While studying at the University of Miami, Ms. Tschumy was a teaching assistant from 1988 to 1990, and after obtaining her MFA, an adjunct professor of sculpture from 1991 to 2003. Drawing upon her mastery of casting, she was also the director of the university’s foundry from 1992 to 2003 and founding director of the Foundry Guild between 1993 and 2003. Following her academic retirement, she was vice president and instructor of ArtSouth’s foundry in Homestead, Florida, from 2004 to 2006.
