60 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION she has enjoyed obtaining information and teaching students how to accrue knowledge in a variety of subjects. Likewise, she has conducted workshops and seminars, where she emphasized the importance of global education. A contributor of articles to professional journals and author or co-author of several books, Dr. Blalock is a lifetime member of the American Library Association and maintained roles in various offices of the American Association of University Women. Currently on the board of directors of the Sam Houston State University Alumni Association, she had a library at the Huntsville Baptist Church named in her honor, titled the Bonnie Baker Thorne Library, in 2013. Dr. Blalock was nominated for the Minnie Fisher Piper Award in 1990. Additionally, Sam Houston State established a scholarship in her name and gave her a Service Award in 2011. W hile working in the registrar’s office at Sam Houston State University in 1956, Dr. Bonnie Baker Thorne Blalock took a course in library science and immediately became enthralled by the subject. Studying toward a bachelor’s degree, she received a Bachelor of Library Science in 1960. From there, she was hired as a librarian at Sam Houston State while working towards a Master of Library Science, which she earned from Texas Women’s University in 1964. Remaining with Sam Houston State for the entirety of her 46-year long career, she was promoted to director of public services in 1970, assistant professor in the School of Library Science in 1972, acting director of the School of Library Science in 1977 and associate professor turned full professor in 1988. Remaining in that role until her retirement in 1993, she continued to teach as an adjunct professor for the following eight years. While working at Sam Houston State, Dr. Blalock earned a PhD from Texas Women’s University in 1975.
