70 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A fter accumulating 45 years of professional experience in academia, Dr. Jennifer Lee Berry Ferguson retired in 2015 after three years as an English Literacy Specialist in the Klein Independent School District. She began her career in 1968 in the Aldine Independent School District as a kinesiology teacher, coach and dance team director. In 1974, she moved to Spring Branch Independent School District as a dance team director and English teacher. Recruited by Houston Baptist University (HBU), she became a professor of kinesiology, chairman, organizer and coach of the women’s NCAA volleyball team, and developed curriculum and programs for accreditation. She continued her career after HBU as an English teacher and then an English Literacy Specialist for Houston ISD, and then Klein ISD. To prepare for her career, Dr. Ferguson obtained a BA in 1968 from HBU. Later on, she received a Master of Education from Stephen F. Austin State University, and in 1994, she received an EdD from the University of Houston. As a certified English, physical education/health teacher in the State of Texas, Dr. Ferguson also became certified as an English Literacy Specialist, English as a second language for grades six through twelve and a pre-AP, “Laying the Foundation,” accredited teacher. Volunteer work is also a priority for Dr. Ferguson, who has served as the chair of the “Guild” Silver Tea, which honors recipients of post-graduate scholarships in education at HBU. Likewise, she is a long-time member of the “American Museum Society” at HBU and has been elected president for the 2020-2022 years. In 1985, she participated in the “NASA Teacher in Space Program” to be the first teacher in space. She has affiliations with TAHPERD, Teachers of English, the Texas Retired Teachers Association, Kappa Delta Pi and Delta Psi Kappa. Dr. Ferguson has earned several accolades fromHBU: the 1996Meritorious Alumni Award, and the 1992 Faculty Woman of the Year. Additionally, she was named “Teacher of the Year” by Memorial High School, SBISD, in 1985. Married with one son, Dr. Ferguson enjoys interior decorating, sewing, cooking, gardening, tutoring in writing and analyzing literary works.
