96 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D r. Peter Suedfeld entered Queens College in 1953, but enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1955 in light of his desire to serve his country. After being discharged in 1958, he returned to Queens College, where he was inspired by Prof. Alice Lasker to devote himself to a new career, seeking new knowledge and discovering previously unknown facts. He majored in psychology, graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts and a commission in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, where he served from 1960 to 19701. Dr. Suedfeld earned the MA and PhD in psychology from Princeton University. During this time, he taught at Trenton State College as a lecturer and the University of Illinois as a visiting assistant professor of psychology. In 1967, he was hired by the University College of Rutgers University as an assistant professor and was a full professor and department chairman by the time of to his departure in 1972. Dr. Suedfeld was professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia from 1972 until becoming emeritus in 2001. He also served as department head and then as dean of the faculty of graduate studies. In 2000, he was named a distinguished scholar-in-residence by the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies. Although retired from the university, Dr. Suedfeld continues to lecture in the field. Authoring and editing numerous publications, Dr. Suedfeld concentrated his writing and research in environmental and political psychology, personality theory and social psychology, among other focus areas. He is especially interested in studying the ways in which individuals, including political and military leaders, react to high stress and traumatic environments. Dr. Suedfeld is an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. He has received the Canadian Polar Medal and Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Additionally, the Parliament of Canada bestowed upon him the Zachor Award in 2000, and the National Science Foundation gave him the Antarctica Service Medal in 1994.
