279 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SCIENCES, PHARMACEUTICALS AND BIOTECHNOLOGY advancements in understanding genetics and marine biology. She has conducted experiments on breeding, genomics and aquaculture of shellfish, such as oysters, mussels, scallops and clams. She also investigated chromosomal manipulation and genetics to understand the mechanisms involved in obtaining polyploids and clones, and the effects of pollution on shellfish. She participated in a cooperative research project under a joint U.S.-China agreement regarding population genetics, and developed a cytogenetic and cytological technique for shellfish larvae and other zooplankton. Dr. Stiles draws upon a BS in biology from Xavier University, a master’s degree in zoology and ecology from the University of Connecticut, and PhD from the University of Massachusetts. She has contributed 40 articles, authored peer- reviewed publications and appeared in the textbook “Science” in 1989. Dr. Stiles served on the genetics working group committee of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea and maintains affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Fisheries Society, Genetics Society of America, African Scientific Institute and National Technical Association, where she served as regional director for the Northeast. She has served as a mentor to others and traveled to Canada, China, Denmark, Germany and Iceland. Dr. Stiles has accrued numerous accolades, including the Service Award for “56 Years of Exceptional Government Service and Advancing the Science of Genetics” from the NOAA in 2018. She earned the National Technical Association Achievement Award and has garnered Sustained Superior and Outstanding Performance and QSI Awards, among others. E xposed to nature from an early age, Dr. Sheila S. Stiles Jewell enjoyed learning about science. She has served as a team leader and geneticist with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center Laboratory, where she has made significant discoveries and SHEILA S.
