Named Engineer of the Year by the Research Institute for Bridge Integrity and Safety in 1989, Dr. Fisher also earned the Roy W. Crum Distinguished Service Award from the Transportation Research Board in 2001. Earlier, he was honored with an Alumni Achievement Award from Washington University in St. Louis and the John A. Roebling Medal from the Engineering Society of Western Pennsylvania. Recently, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Education from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2007, among other awards. A distinguished member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, from whom he received several other recognitions, Dr. Fisher is especially proud of assisting the American Association of State and Highway Officials in changing specification provisions with the American railroad system. A fter serving to the rank of second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Dr. John W. Fisher completed higher education at Washington University in St. Louis, achieving a BS in civil engineering in 1956. From there, he matriculated in Lehigh University and earned an MS and PhD in 1958 and 1964, respectively. While studying, Dr. Fisher served from research instructor to associate professor at Lehigh University until being promoted to full professor of civil engineering in 1969. During his tenure, he also excelled as associate director of the Fritz Engineering Laboratory, co-chairman of civil engineering, director of advanced technology and large structural systems at the university’s Engineering Research Center, co-director and Joseph T. Stuart Professor. He attained emeritus status in 2002. Receiving an honorary doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in 1988, for whom he served as a visiting professor, Dr. Fisher has also sat on the executive committee of the Transportation Research Board.
