226 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Dr. Alix McDonald Smith, as a teenager, dreamed and desired a career inmedicine. Growing up in Botswana, she volunteeredwith her mother, who was a Registered Nurse, at the Botswana Red Cross. Her mother trained Dr. McDonald Smith to provide basic medical skills like weighing babies, nutrition and immunizations. Influenced by the success of her parents in both educational development and medical volunteerism within Botswana, Dr. McDonald Smith moved to the United States in her mid-20s. Her journey crossed continents, involved several wars, and has spanned decades for fulfilling a far-reaching medical career that has positively impacted so many people along her way. Dr. McDonald Smith received a Bachelor of Science in pre-medical studies from Hawaii Pacific University and her MD from the School of Medicine at Ross University in 2004. She is board certified through the American Board of Family Medicine and elected the Degree of Fellow by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. McDonald Smith enlisted into the Army Reserve in 2001 and received a direct Commission in 2004 and serves today as a lieutenant colonel. Dr. McDonald Smith deployed multiple times to the Middle East and Europe to serve as an Army Combat Physician. Dr. McDonald Smith has excelled as a family physician contracted in emergency medicine working throughout U.S. emergency rooms. To remain abreast of developments in the ever-changing field of medicine, Dr. McDonald Smith continues to attend, enroll and ensure she is up to date in emergency medicine as well as family medicine. Dr. McDonald Smith also participated in medical mission trips to Africa and Central America. To attest to her profound success, she received the Army Commendation Medal from the Army, as well as the Real Hero’s Award from the American Red Cross. Her career has not always been easy, and she has practiced medicine under some trying circumstances, but this only drove Dr. McDonald Smith to embrace life’s experiences and excel through them. Dr. McDonald Smith attributes her success to her love of humanity, dedication to her patients, and her standards of treating all her patients with dignity and respect.
