88 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Notably, Dr. Hammond is a founding fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) and Health Level Seven International. Likewise, he has been a fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association since 2012 and a member of such prestigious organizations as the National Library of Medicine, Sigma Xi and the Order of St. Patrick. Dr. Hammond received the William W. Stead Award for Thought Leadership in Informatics from the American Medical Informatics Association in 2015, who also gave him a President’s Award in 1993 and 1998. He received the Morris F. Collen Award of Excellence and the Paul Elwood Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003, was named an ACMI Distinguished Lecturer, earned the W.E. Hammond Volunteer of the Year Award, and was named to the Visionary and Innovators Database. After earning a BS in electrical engineering in 1957 and a PhD in 1967 from Duke University, Dr. William Edward Hammond II became employed by his alma mater as an assistant professor in 1968. Discovering his fascination with medicine and biomedical engineering, he later served as an assistant professor before being promoted to associate professor in 1971 and full professor of biomedical engineering in 1980. Drawing upon more than 50 years in the field and 25 years as a full professor, Dr. Hammond attained emeritus status in 2005. During his tenure at Duke University, Dr. Hammond also served as chief of medical information, director of the Center for Health Informatics, and director of the Master of Management in Clinical Informatics Program. He was a professor of family medicine and community health, professor of biostatistics and bioinformatics, and research professor in Duke University’s School of Nursing.
