After immigrating to the United States in 1964, he served as a house physician at Laird Memorial Hospital in Montgomery, West Virginia, before becoming a resident in general surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati in 1965. Subsequently, Dr. Alvarado served in the same capacity at Orange Memorial Hospital in Orlando, Florida, and at Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia between 1966 and 1968 before completing a residency in thoracic surgery at Temple University Hospital in 1968 and at the Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia in 1970. Supported by an MD from the National University of Bogotá in 1957, Dr. Alvarado is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He holds 15 U.S. patents and authored an article titled “Diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis” in 1986, alongside several other articles regarding surgical techniques and surgical instruments. Notably, Dr. Alvarado is the founder of the Alvarado Score for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis, which he cites as a crowning moment of his career. Dr. Alvarado is a fellow of the International College of Surgeons, a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and a past medical officer of the Colombian Navy, where he served from 1957 to 1964. As a testament to his resounding success in the medical field, he was honored with the Safety Devices Award from the Inventors Society of South Florida in 1993. Attributing his success to the opportunities he was given while growing up in Colombia, Dr. Alvarado was the first in his family to attend college, leveraging his desire to help others. Looking forward, he intends to continue enjoying his well-deserved retirement.
