Working as a disaster recovery counselor since Hurricane Andrew, she continued assisting Marylanders in the aftermath of Isabel. She also served as director of one of the largest homeless shelters in Philadelphia. She continues as a certified crisis response counselor in New Jersey, assisting with disaster recovery and as a certified benefits counselor. She uses her crisis and disaster skills to assist her clients holistically far beyond the immediate needs. In the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, Dr. Hawes was a volunteer counselor for the COVID Hotline with the county health department until May 2020. She has been a presenter for the Psychiatric Nurses Association conferences on substance abuse and mental health issues and is a member of Rotary International. Receiving a BA as the first double major in philosophy and psychology from Roanoke College in 1977, Dr. Barbara Hawes completed coursework in deaf education at the University of Virginia. While pursuing her master’s degree, she was a mental health crisis counselor in the emergency room at the University hospital as a clinical instructor. She completed graduate coursework in counseling psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She then obtained a PhD in clinical psychology from Charisma University in 2014. From 1993 to 1998, Dr. Hawes served as senior counselor, helping to develop the first community crisis beds in the area for Vesta, Inc. She became the director of crisis prevention and stabilization services, and the department expanded into the adjacent county. Deciding to serve in further crisis response roles, she advanced to deputy director of the Crisis Response System (CRS) of Maryland from 2000 to 2003 for Affliated Sante’, Inc.
