Before pursuing his military career, Dr. Huurman attended Northwestern University, where he earned an MD in 1962, and subsequently completed an internship at the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Illinois, in 1963. Soon thereafter, he completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, California, in 1971. From 1980 to 1995, Dr. Huurman was active in the U.S. Navy Reserve while also completing vocational work as an orthopedic surgeon and director of pediatrics and orthopedic surgery at the Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, between 1977 and 2004. During this time, he concurrently served as a professor of pediatrics and orthopedic surgery at the University of Nebraska in Omaha from 1977 until attaining emeritus status in 2006. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Huurman served as president and chairman of the board of directors of the Arthritis Foundation in Nebraska in 1984, as well as a reviewer for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons from 1998 to 2008. A prior editorial board member of Pediatrics in Review from 1995 to 2000 and JB&JS from 1983 to 1987, he has contributed several articles to professional publications. Dr. Huurman is a former president of several organizations, such as the Nebraska Orthopedic Society and the Omaha Midwest Clinical Society. He is a fellowof the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. In light of his success, he earned a Pediatrics Legend Award from the Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in 2012. Although his career has been abound with highlights, he is especially proud of treating children who have struggled with medical afflictions. At the inception of his career in 1963, Dr. Walter W. Huurman enlisted in the United States Navy and served to the rank of captain by 1977. During this time, he was a flight surgeon aboard the USS Hornet, and upon his departure from active duty, served as a flight surgeon for the National Academy of Sciences in San Diego, WALTER W.
